Cavallino is the journal of Ferrari history, covering Ferraris old and new for over 40 years. It's the most reliable, most trusted source of everything Ferrari. Ever since the first issue in 1978 Cavallino presents extensive stories and detailed information from knowledgeable experts and enthusiasts who share the passion for Ferrari. All Ferraris are unique, and each one has its own chassis serial number. This is how the Ferrari world keeps track of all the great cars. Cavallino is the only publication that prints the serial number for every Ferrari mentioned in our stories, articles, and race results.

4 | Commento | In defense of Enzo Ferrari A critique of the Brock Yates book Michael T. Lynch It is not hyperbole to suggest that Brock Yates' Enzo Ferrari is book that had to be written. After years of the specialist publishing industry grinding out book after book about Ferrari automobiles, often inaccurate, this is the first scholar study of the man behind these mythical vehicles. Ferrari's own autobiographical efforts are almost laughable for the transparency of their posturing. The contents often clash with known historic fact, and Ferrari contradicted his own writings in many interviews. |
12 | Letterature | Klemantaski on Ferrari by Louis Klemantaski Michael T. Lynch Louis Klemantaski is one of the handful of motorsport photographers whose work transcends mere documentation. He created great art during his time as part of the moveable feast that was European motor racing from the immediate prewar era into the sixties. Because he was interested in the total experience - the people, the sessions, the cars and the emotions they engendered - his captured moments are intensely evocative of their times. |
12 | Letterature | Ferrari - Salute to the Spyder by Henry Rasmussen We always enjoy Henry Rasmussen's automotive photographic work. It is clear, bold, detailed, properly composed, with great attention given to color, highlight, and reflection. In addition, there is much thoughtfulness given to the placement of cars in imaginative and innovative settings, with becoming, however, too avant garde. |
15 | Notizie | Ferrari F40 legalized in Switzerland Relief for Swiss Ferraristi! Marcel Massini Marcel Massini About eight units of the limited Ferrari F40 production have been sold to Switzerland, but the super sports car has never been homologated by the Swiss authorities! In fact, the Factory in Maranello built a U.S. version of the F40, but did not even offer an adapter F40 for the small Swiss market. Clever specialist have now developed various modifications and have thus solved the problems for permission for road use. |
15 | Notizie | Ferrari F40 modifications available Ten Tenths Motorsport Courtesy of Ten Tenths The owners of F40s who have become exasperated by the lack of vision through the rear view mirror due to the central spar of the engine cover can now relax. Ten Tenths, Nick Mason's film and TV vehicle hire company, has developed and produced a replacement rear window incorporating an additional central row of louvres which allows the driver to see clearly behind. |
16 | Notizie | 1992 AGM Ferrari Club Suisse Marcel Massini Marcel Massini Small Switzerland has three Ferrari clubs and the Ferrari Club Suisse is the second largest, following the Bugatti-Ferrari Owner's Club Switzerland. Ferrari Club Suisse was founded in 1974 by the then official Ferrari importer SAVAF in Geneva. It currently has 184 members from all regions of Switzerland. For this year's annual general meeting the club invited its members to Vitznau for the weekend of May 15 and 16. |
16 | Notizie | Ferrari Brunch in Japan Junichiro Hiramatsu Junichiro Hiramatsu On April 26th, Mr. Yoshio Matsuda, owner of the Matsuda Collection, opened the 1992 Ferrari Brunch at the Vintage car Garden in the Fuji-Hakone National Park near Mt. Fuji. over 150 Ferraris were gathered at this meeting. The highlight Ferrari of this meeting was Mr. Hayashi's 250 GTO, s/n 3705 GT. This GTO gained second place and the GT win at the 1962 Le Mans, the best GTO in the world. |
18 | Notizie | Reading Concours, 1992 Mark Wallach Mark Wallach There's something about a country club that imparts a sense of tranquility and isolation from the real world. Just the place to show Ferraris! A long drive along a tree lined road to an open area with a gently sloping grass field and on hundred Ferraris. The road led to a circle drive with a shooting fountain and behind it a French chateau, aka, the Reading Country Club. |
18 | Notizie | Horses that catch the Eye Ferrari products that have stood the test of time There is a school of thought in marketing that you should change your product often. Others feel that if you are selling something often and well, don't change it, fix it, touch it, do anything! We know of one Ferrari prancing horse that's been around since the early 1970s, and yes, it looks as good today as back then. It's a three-dimensional sculpturing of the Ferrari symbol, and it was one of the first that was accurate and believable from all angles. |
19 | Feature | Tour De France Auto! Another Classic Race is brought back to Life Keith Bluemel, Marcel Massini, W. Henderickx Keith Bluemel, Marcel Massini After a lengthy gestation period to resolve the logistics and get the package right, the labors of the organizing committee came to fruition on April 22 in Paris, with the start of the first retrospective "Tour Auto," or "Tour de France Auto." The original Tour Auto was first run in 1899, with the last being run in 1986, so it can lay claim to being one of the oldest, established and longest running competitive driving events in the world. |
24 | Feature | Prima Mille Miglia! There are few things as exciting in one person's lifetime at the famous Mille Miglia - for the First Time! Ron Tonkin, Marcel Massini Courtesy of the Tonkins May 21, 1992 finally arrived. I had to pinch myself to believe it was really happening. After so many year of being at the top of my "all time personal wish list," I was in Brescia, Italy, with my youngest son, Brad, and our thoroughbred machine, a 1953 Ferrari 212 Inter Vignale, s/n 0271 EU, and the three of us were awaiting a 9:44:35 pm flag off from the starting grid. |
29 | Feature | A collection of 15,000 Ferraris - Miniatures that is! The unique and extraordinary collection of Junichiro Hiramatsu Michitake Isobe Mikio Tanaka A visit to Junichiro Hiramatsu's collection of Ferraris and Ferrari items is always a lot of fun and full of surprises. Mr. Hiramatsu has been a Ferrari enthusiast for over thirty years and his 15,000 scale models are but the tip of the iceberg. His interest extends to all aspects of Ferrari: Factory literature, models, memorabilia, and of course, the actuals cars. |
34 | Corse | On the Continent ... Formula One Championship Mark Armstrong Back from Brazil, the Ferrari team had almost a full month to sort things out before the Spanish Grand Prix in May. Testing began immediately at Fiorano, with follow up sessions at Estoril in Portugal on April 13-15, and at Imola in San Marino, Italy on April 22-24 and 27-29. This program was initiated by Messrs. Montezemolo and Lauda, who had found in the mid-1970s that nothing so helps the Ferrari soul and directs the Italian mind to success as constant testing, testing, testing. Spanish Grand Prix - Alesi third on a good weekend San Marino Grand Prix - Both drivers out, but progress is made Monaco Grand Prix - Again both are out, but things improve Tio Pepe Gran Premio de España 1992 FIA Formula One World Championship round 04, Spain, 1 - 3 May 1992 Gran Premio Iceberg di San Marino 1992 FIA Formula One World Championship round 05, San Marino, 15 - 17 May 1992 50. Grand Prix de Monaco FIA Formula One World Championship round 06, Monaco, 28 - 31 May 1992 |
36 | Corse | Ferrari 348 ts to compete is U.S. GT Ferrari racing will be coming to America if things work out as planned. Ferrari North America is proposing a series of races around the U.S. with customers using their 348s to compete amongst themselves, and not against any other marque. The cars will remain essentially stock, with the Factory providing add-on kits (for motor, suspension, safety) to make them more suitable for racing. |
36 | Corse | Pirelli Maranello Challenge heads into another Great Year The English have shown the way in Ferrari GT racing in recent years and this great series sponsored by Pirelli Tires and Maranello Concessionaires has become an unstoppable machine. This year sees some new Ferraris - John Wilson's F40, Michael Millard's 512i, Adrian Walker's Testarossa, David Barker's 400 GT, and some very lightweight 308 GT4s - and a few 328s, but the car of choice remains the 308 GTB. Round One - Donington Park, April 12, 1992 Round Two - Brands Hatch, April 20, 1992 Round Three - Oulton Park, May 4, 1992 |
36 | Corse | Ferrari F40s compete in Italy 1992 Gran Criterium Supercar GT Autosprint Many people bemoan the fact that Ferrari is no longer in GT racing, but few have done much about it. Apart from the ongoing and very successful Pirelli Maranello Ferrari Challenge in England, and the moderately successful appearance of a French-prepared F40 LM in IMSA recently in the U.S., there have been few venues for GT Ferraris to appear, until now ... |
36 | Corse | Ferraris at Le Mans again? ... a real possibility! Just as we headed to press, word came from Europe that sports car racing as we know it now (the big expensive prototypes) will be a thing of the past and that a supercar GT class will take its place. One firm reportedly interested is Ferrari, who would either field a works team of F40 LMs, or support customers in their own F40s. |
